The 78744 zip code is one of fifteen sites (zip codes) of the state's Community Youth Development Program. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services administers the local program and evaluates the statewide program, changes in juvenile crime rates, school attendance, school performance and school discipline referrals.
Youth Advisory Committee
The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is made up of 11-17 year olds who want to develop strong leadership skills. They serve as the "youth voice" of the 78744 community and work with the CCC to establish the vision of the local program. The YAC provides community outreach to publicize program services, while emphasizing the perspective and needs of the youth population. At least two YAC members sit on the CCC. The two groups work in partnership to ensure a youth perspective regarding the effectiveness of programs in meeting identified needs and gaps in services.
Summer Youth Employment
The Work-Based Learning/Summer Youth Employment Program is a joint venture of the City of Austin and Travis County that targets youth between 14 and 17 to provide them with experiences to prepare them for a future as productive citizens, including job readiness training. Youth are referred through non-profit organizations, the community at large, and other Austin Youth Services programs. The program engages youth in meaningful community-enhancing work that develops positive work habits while working in an environment with adult supervision and support. They can work 95 hours in one of two sessions, and are involved in a broad range of projects, including neighborhood cleanup and parks development, journalism and media production, animal care and advocacy, office management, art and mural projects, and child care and education assistance.
