Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center Main Gallery, September 17-November 5, 2011
A Mayan study represents artist's return to his roots. This wonderful exhibit gives a comprehensive viewing of Mr. Soto's work over several decades.

An authentic Austin creative treasure, our community is indeed a richer place because of him. Not only do we exhibit an incredible variety of works in several media, but we also show the artist's own sketchbooks to give us insight into his creative process.

The pottery, metal sculpture and paintings on display show an in-depth study of Mayan culture and it's mysterious hieroglyphs. The artist's sense of self is well integrated with his awareness of these ancient symbols and their continued relevance to today's Mexican and Mexican American societies.

Ishmael Herrera Soto was born in Austin, Texas. He received his BFA from the University of Texas and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of the Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Soto is an Adjunct Professor of Art at the Rio Grande campus of the Austin Community College, where he teaches beginning and advanced pottery classes.
